Blackduck Golf Club
Blackduck Municipal Golf Course is a nine-hole, city-owned course just east of Blackduck Lake and Pine Tree State Park. It’s a product of the New Deal. Local golfers bought 70 acres in 1935 and gave the land to the city in January 1936, and that April the Works Progress Administration (WPA) put crews to work clearing it. They blasted out big pine stumps with dynamite. One spring, 20 extra men who had been assigned to gravel county roads were sent to cut fairways instead, because the ground was still too frozen for road work. A local committee led by Dr. S.L. Conley, a Blackduck dentist, planned the layout, and the WPA project wrapped up in 1939 at a total cost of about $35,000. More than 85 years later, the course still plays as a par-36 nine of about 3,100 yards in a quiet North Woods setting.
