Baker National Golf Course
Baker National Golf Course sits inside the 2,700-acre Baker Park Reserve in Medina, about 20 miles west of Minneapolis, and it feels miles from anywhere. Run by Three Rivers Park District, it has no houses in sight, just woods, wetlands and native prairie, with an old barn waiting behind the very first green. The Championship Course, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, is one of the most respected public courses in the state and one of its toughest, a par-72 test of nearly 6,800 yards from the back tees. The course has deep roots. It started in the 1960s as the nine-hole Medina Golf Course, became Baker Park Golf Course when the park district took over in 1974, and was rebuilt as 18 holes by Hurdzan in the late 1980s, taking the name Baker National in 1990. Hurdzan even restored wetlands that an earlier farmer had drained, which now guard holes like the par-3 15th, where anything short, left or right means a penalty. In 1995 Baker National became the first course in Minnesota certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, an honor it still holds. There’s plenty here beyond the big course: the nine-hole Evergreen Executive Course (also home to FootGolf), a driving range, a busy Golf Academy with lessons and camps for every age, and some of the best-value green fees for a course of this quality.
