Gunflint Hills Golf Club
Gunflint Hills Golf Course is a nine-hole course about four miles up the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais, set high in the wooded hills above Lake Superior. Owned and run by the City of Grand Marais, it’s a public course with a true up-north feel: narrow, tree-lined fairways, plenty of elevation change, and ponds and marsh in play. Native grasses and wildflowers line the holes, and deer and other wildlife often wander through. It plays to par 36 and about 3,000 yards from the back tees, but don’t let the length fool you. The small, quick, rolling greens and tight fairways make it play tougher than it looks; the 133 slope is high for a nine-holer. Each hole has its own character, and the walks between holes are short. There’s a driving range (one of the few flat spots on the Gunflint Trail, as the course jokes), a practice green, cart and club rentals, and a casual clubhouse with a patio overlooking the course.
