Babbitt Golf Club
Babbitt Golf Course is a nine-hole public course on the eastern Iron Range, about a mile west of town on Highway 21. It has been run since 1962 by the Babbitt Golf Association, a nonprofit founded by local golfers when Babbitt was a growing Reserve Mining town. Volunteers and members have looked after it ever since. The course plays to par 35 for men and 36 for women and stretches to about 3,200 yards. It’s mostly level, with pine-lined fairways that make for an easy walk, but the trees punish a stray drive and the greens are known for being tricky. Twenty-one tee boxes in four colors give every golfer a fair set of tees, and the whole course is irrigated. The clubhouse has a kitchen and pro shop, carts are available to rent, and you don’t need a tee time. About 150 members play in weekly leagues for men, seniors, women and couples, and the course stays open to the public throughout. If you’re headed toward Ely or the Boundary Waters, it’s an easy stop for a relaxed nine in the North Woods. Call (218) 827-2603 for rates and hours.
