Silver Bay Golf Course
Silver Bay Golf Course was built in 1959 by the Reserve Mining Company, the same company behind the town itself, and opened to the public in 1983. Now owned by the City of Silver Bay, it’s a well-kept regulation nine-hole course, par 36 and 3,173 yards from the back tees. The holes cross the east branch of the Beaver River and are ringed by heavily forested hills, so the course is as scenic as it is fair, and well worth a stop on a North Shore trip. The course has some history worth looking for as you play. Designed by W.S. Haley in 1957, it was built on the old Betzler family farm, and the builders left the graves of Joseph and Rosina Betzler, who died in 1918 and 1920, untouched beside what is now the 4th hole. When a steel strike shut down the Reserve Mining plant in 1959, the company’s salaried staff spent the summer clearing and seeding the fairways themselves. Today, a bell on the 5th-hole bridge lets golfers ring through to the group behind them once the green is clear.
